Literacy:
Writer's Corner:
Monday-Wednesday-Friday we will be exploring and engaging in a variety of work from different authors and illustrators. Your child will be making their own books with words and illustrations throughout this school year. All of their writing will be staying at school. We will have special times during the school year when you can come to see their work.
Tuesday-Thursday we will have our formal writing and our Cast-a-Spell spelling program.
Reader's Corner:
We will begin our letter study next week. We will be studying letter Bb. Each letter has a name, a picture and a sound. Children need to be practicing all three please. Letter name Bb. Picture is ball. Sound is /b/. Remember when you make the sound it is not "buh". Snip off the "uh" and make just the /b/ sound. Bb is a closed sound because it is a consonant. Practice this letter all week. Focus on the lowercase letter/b/. Make a b and tape it on the fridge or in their bedroom. Also we will be studying the words Mom, I. Please practice both word recognition and spelling of each word.
On Friday your child will be coming home with a Black Book Bucket. This is a very special book bucket because each week your child will be bringing home books to read. Please establish four thing with your child:
1. Find a special place in your child's room near their bed for their book bucket. When they come home with books each week, place the books in the book bucket.
2. Read a storybook to your child every night before bed.
3. Have your child read one or two books to you from their book bucket each night.
4. Allow your child 5 minutes every night to read to themselves a story from their book bucket. This is to be done independently not with an adult. Lights out after 5 minutes. Bedtime should be between 7:00 and 7:30pm.
The purpose of these activities is to promote early literacy and independent enjoyment from reading daily. The children love this and your child will develop a healthy lifestyle enriched with daily reading.
